Each harvest growers across Australia retain a small amount of grain to be used for future crops. Most growers consciously make an effort to control weeds in crop and prevent weed-seed set at harvest. But are they unknowingly sowing contaminated cropseed, including the seeds of herbicide-resistant weeds, back into their paddocks? A whole-farm approach using a diverse range of weed management tactics and a variety of farm hygiene methods can help guarantee grower-retained seed is weed-free when sownback into cropping paddocks. Retained grain can be contaminated with weed seeds if seed cleaning methods are only partially effective. Introducing contaminated crop seeds into cropping paddocks could impact on future management options in addition to reduced yields and increased herbicide costs.
