In this study, the neuronal cell protective effects of methanol extract of cheonggukjang were evaluated. Proximate composition and total phenols content of the methanol extract were 40.95% crude protein, 22.49% crude fat, 15.99% nitrogen free extract, 7.91% moisture, 6.74% crude ash, 5.92% crude fibre, and 28.43 mg/g of total phenols. Intracellular reactive oxygen species accumulation resulting from H2O2 treatment of PC12 cells was significantly reduced when the methanol extract of cheonggukjang was present in the media compared to PC 12 cells treated with H2O2 without the methanol extract. In a cell viability assay using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium-bromide (MTT), the methanol extract showed protective effects against H2O2 -induced neurotoxicity; lactate dehydrogenase release into the medium was also inhibited. The methanol extract of cheonggukjang also showed inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase, which was dose dependent.
