Have you ever hit a kangaroo? It's a truly grisly experience, leaving a trail of internal organs and crumpled bodywork strewn in its wake. Even worse than hitting a roo is skittling a pedestrian. The scary bit is, it's not all that uncommon. Anyone who has driven down Sydney's George Street at 8am on a weekday knows all about suicidal pedestrians who fling themselves across the road, oblivious to everything but the hot coffee they're cradling in their hands. Get this. In Europe, pedestrians hit by vehicles represent one in five traffic fatalities. That's 7000 people a year. In South Korea, with its high population densities and a far less traffic-savvy population, it's almost twice that. And the funny thing is that in most cases, it's the pedestrian's fault.
