Just because energy conservation is currently hitting the headlines, don't think there's anything new in the idea. Back in 1973, when several of the world's energy producers were cutting off supplies because they thought the world price of oil was insultingly low, a number of British parliamentarians took it into their muddled heads to ban motorsport. Racing engines were obviously inefficient, they figured, so it would reduce the strain on fuel supplies to forbid racing.
