After complex legislative maneuvering, Congress has passed and on January 2011 President Obama signed, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, which represents the most significant overhaul of the regulatory scheme for food safety in 70 years. The newlaw will impose significant new requirements on manufacturers, processors and packers of human and animal foods and gives the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) substantial new enforcement powers designed to further enhance the nation's food safety.
