While the economic outlook for the countries of the developed world looks bleaker with every new piece of data published, oil prices have remained stubbornly high and the market has continued to tighten over the summer, despite the IEA’s strategic stock release and Saudi Arabia’s production increase. Early data suggest that, by the start of the final quarter of the year global oil inventories, including the oil held in strategic reserves, will have fallen by nearly 40 mn bbls since the end of the first quarter.
