摘要

To a birdwatcher, a late autumn lake is a source of wonder. A few months back, most patches of open water would have looked sparse and lazy, with just the odd mallard, mute swan or Canada goose disturbing the smooth surface. Butnow, with the wind whipping up waves and the sky matching the colour of leaden waters, our lakes host a number of visitors. These birds are mainly wildfowl, such as wigeon and teal, colourful travellers that, in contrast to our resident wildfowl, steer clear of the lakeside and fly off when the disturbance gets too much. These birds populate our waters in rafts, making the lake suddenly appear crowded. Most have come from the north of Europe to escape the coming ice and snow. To them, our worst weather is merely chilly - forbirds that live in the water, driving rain and dampness are hardly a problem.
