摘要

Healthy dogs owned by the University staff, students and hospital clients were recruited as blood donors. These pets were regularly vaccinated and did not receive any medication or previous transfusion. Dogs were examined clinically before blood donation. Blood groups and complete blood cell count were determined as well as selected blood chemistry parameters. Where indicated, Ehrlichia, Babesia, Leishmania and Dirofilaria tests were performed. Maximum 10 ml of blood was collected per kilogram bodyweight by gravity in a closed blood bag collection system containing CPDA-1 or CPD+Adsol. Packed erythrocytes (PRBCs) and fresh frozen plasma (FFP) were separated by centrifugation. PRBCs were stored at 4-6deg C for maximum 20 (CPDA-1) or 30 (CPD+Adsol) days and FFP was kept frozen at -30deg C for up to one year. The various biochemical and haematological parameters were measured 0, 20 and 37 after collection. Between 1996 and 1998, 224 blood donations from 149 dogs were performed, and 348 units were transfused to 174 dogs including 49 whole blood (WB) transfusions, 137 PRBCs, 161 FFP units and one unit of platelet-rich plasma. DEA 1.1 negative dogs received only DEA 1.1 negative blood. WB or pRBCs were transfused because of haemorrhage (65 dogs), haemolysis (22) or ineffective erythropoiesis (14). WB was only given to anaemic small dogs with thrombocytopenia or coagulopathy or dogs requiring <150 ml blood. FFP was administered to dogs with parvovirosis (40), coagulopathy (25), chronic gastroenteropathy (13) and other causes (18). Nearly one third of all transfusions were given at night or at week ends, where donor recruitment and collection would have been difficult. Mild acute transfusion reactions were observed in 1.7% of all transfusions.
