Canine eosinophilic bronchopneumopothy

This case report describes a young dog from Spain that was presented for the evaluation of a non-productive cough and exercise intolerance. Haematology showed peripheral eosinophilia. Thoracic radiographs revealed a perihilar soft tissue density opacification of approximately five centimetres in diameter that was not sharply circumscribed and a diffuse bronchointerstitial hyperdensity of the left caudal lung lobe. The lymph nodes around the hilus of the lung were enlarged. The results of an ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration sample of the lung tissue revealed the presence of an eosinophilic inflammation. Possible pathogenetic mechanisms are discussed in this paper. The pathogenesis is likely to be immune-mediated, involving a kind of hypersensitivity mechanism. The possibility that the eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy (ECP) could be associated with an occult dirofilariosis is discussed. A therapy based solely on corticosteroids resulted in a rapid resolution of the clinical and radiographic signs.
