Derek Alford creates a responsive and efficient control mechanism. In 1995 a friend and I bought a 7.25 inch gauge petrol driven locomotive, disguised as an out of scale BR Class 20. It had two Sinclair C5 motors as alternative power, which were removed, and work started on the design of new bogies to replace the weak originals. There was no urgency to this project. Later my wife desired an electric locomotive to drive, like her friends who had access to 5 inch gauge Metropolitan locomotives supplied by Dan Jeavons. As husbands must, I agreed, but had in mind the 7.25 inch gauge version for which Dan supplied a body moulding. Realising the aforementioned Sinclair C5 motors were suitable, a scratch built pair of bogies and chassis were made from drawings and photographs published by K. R. Benest (refs 1 and 2).
