If the transmission system of a locomotive is power rated on the assumption of an adhesion factor of 0.2 it will be at risk of overload if operated to its adhesion limit on dry and possibly rusty track. Given that permanent magnet motor output torque is almost proportional to armature current, the insertion of an ammeter will visually inform the driver. The author's 400lb mass Metropolitan and BR Class 20 miniature locomotives anticipate around 36 ampere for safe continuous output, and incorporate 60-0-60 ampere metres available from auto accessory suppliers. The centre zero display means they function in reverse, as well as show the effect of regenerative braking.
