Food safety concerns have heightened interest in ubiquitous organisms such as Salmonella, especially because certain Salmonella species can produce illness in man. This has made it necessary to study their presence in both raw and processed poultry by-product meal and spent hen meal. An additional concern is how the ingredients can be stored and fed as Salmonella negative feedstuffs. In the 1995 National Renderers Association, Inc. Publication, "The Genus Salmo-nella", the most frequently identifiedserotypes from July 1992-June 1993 were listed. The major clinical isolates from 323 chicken samples were: S. heidelberg, 22%; S. hadar, 15.67%; S. enteritidis, 9.8%; and S. typhimurium, 67.5%. This data demonstrates that there is the potential to propagate Salmonella.
