In less than a decade, coal 'nine methane (CMM) an coalbed methane (CBM) production in the US rose six-fold, from about 5.7 billion m3 to 34 billion m~3 in 1999 (EIA Annual Reserve Report, www.eia.doe.gov), representing about 6 percent of the nations annual gas supply. CMM constitutes about 1.33 billion m~3 of the current 34 billion m~3 of CBM produced. According to a study entitled Natural Gas: Meeting the Challenges of the Nation's Growing Gas Demand by the National Petroleum Council (NPC), without this CBM/CMM production and its associated 11,320 billion m~3 resource base, gas prices would be significantly higher.
