Oil-Dri solves west coast problem with Clorox buy

Chicago-based Oil-Dri Corp. has gone some way to solving its west coast USA supply problem with the purchase of A&M Products, a Clorox Co. subsidiary in Taft, California. A&M mines, processes and packages calcium bentonite under the Jonny Cat~R pet litter brand in the region. The deal comes as a relief for Oil-Dri, which has reached an impasse with a mine and plant project it has been trying to develop near Reno, Nevada for two years. The deal includes what Oil-Dri described as "extensive mineral reserves" as well as the Jonny Cat~R brand itself. The cost of the transaction has not been revealed but the companies expect the deal to be concluded by the end of the year. this latest agreement follows on from a 2001 deal that saw A&M Products transfer its east coast production of Jonny Cat~R from a mine in Wrens, Georgia, to Oil-Dri's manufacturing facilities.
