S Grundon (Ewelme) Ltd and director, N S Grundon, were fined a total of 65,000 pounds in May for badly polluting a stream and woodland at Linden Hill and a lake on Castle Royle Golf Club at Knowl Hill, near Maidenhead. The company was fined 50,000 pounds and N S Grundon was individually fined 15,000 pounds at Reading Crown Court, with costs of 4,870 pounds. The incident took place in May 2001, when 500,000 gallons of polluted stagnant water from a quarry lagoon at the company's Star Works site at Knowl Hill, was deliberately pumped into the woodland, eventually flowing into the Linden Hill stream. The nearby Castle Royle Golf and Country Club lake became black and depleted of oxygen, and many fish died. N S Grundon had personally ordered the water to be pumped out over a four-day bank holiday period. Both he and the company pleaded guilty to a charge brought under S85(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991.
