GLOBAL Witness shortly will publish a report which robustly demonstrates the need for greater due diligence and more honest communications from companies trading in minerals from conflict areas. The report, based on recent first-hand field research in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), shows that most of the mines in the eastern part of the country (primarily cassiterite, coltan, wolframite and gold) are controlled by armed groups, including the Congolese army, and that civilians are being used as pawns by opposing parties.
