Landmark Cars: Citroen Mehari

When the Mehari appeared in 1968 it could not claim to be the first of its type. Models such as the VW Kubelwagen and Mini Moke had preceded it - utility models derived from popular car models. The difference was that whereas the Kubelwagen and the Moke were originally conceived as military vehicles, the Mehari was not. The Moke's lack of ground clearance had swiftly brought its military aspirations to an end. The Mehari, or Dyane 6 Mehari as it was called, was derived from the Citroen Dyane, the car that was supposed to replace the 2CV, but didn't. It may well have been inspired by the Moke, which had appeared four years earlier.
