DURING HIS RECENT visit to Australia, Newmont Mining Corporation vice chairman Pierre Lassonde made it clear that the company was still looking to become - yet again-the world's largest gold producer. At his press conference after giving the keynote speech at this year's Diggers & Dealers Mining Forum in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, the charismatic Lassonde said the world could expect some further announcements over the next 2-3 months regarding Newmont's aspirations, although he didn't give away too many details of what they might entail. "I mean you have already seen some new initiatives from management," Lassonde remarked.
