A gravity concentration device used by the coal sector -- which operates on the principle of hindered settling -- enjoys the best distribution configuration when the aperture size of the holes in its distributor plate is a consistent 10 millimetres in diameter. Research based on hydrodynamic flow pattern modelling and carried out by the University of Kwazulu-Natal's school of chemical engineering in South Africa has shown that the teetered bed separator (TBS) produces an even and upward velocity profile when a 10 mm hole-only plate is utilised.
