Since 1991 a good portion of BHP Billiton Ltd's WA mining and expansion activities has been undertaken by Henry Walker Eltin, including the Area C development (2003) and stage two of the Yandi operation (1996). Between 1990-2004 mining contractors were employed on 14 of the 18 iron ore developments in Australia. Last year they produced some 40 percent (76 million tonnes) of the country's ore exports. And despite the fact BHP Billiton's rival Rio Tinto Ltd has predominantly used its own fleet for its Pilbara operations, there is still no denying that dirt movers have played a significant role in the development of the national mining sector.
