Juniors account for about 80 percent of the capital raised explicitly for mineral exploration in Australia, with the remaining 20 percent coming from small producers. Furthermore, the smaller players make up more than 70 percent of the number of companies engaged in mineral exploration in the country and contribute 30-40 percent of total field expenditure. But despite playing such a significant role in the effort to top up Australia's mineral inventory, the junior is regarded in some industry circles as an endangered species as it tries to keep the peace with a mostly fickle market.
