The BHP Billiton Ltd-Mitsubishi Corporation alliance (BMA) is Australia's largest coal producer and a leader in the international coal industry. It accounts for more than a quarter of the country's annual coal exports and 28 percent of the world's seaborne trade in metallurgical coal. BMA's eight mines supply quality coal for both domestic and international customers and have a capacity to produce more than 50 million tonnes annually. They comprise high quality coking coals, weak coking coals, pulverised coal injection (PCI) coals and thermal coals, which are sold to more than 60 customers in 24 countries. A recent changing of the guard has seen John Smith replace Dave Murray as chief executive of the alliance. The group's mines are located in the coal-rich Bowen Basin of Central Queensland and, with the exception of the Crinum underground longwall operation, the mines are open cut using dragline and truck/shovel fleets for overburden removal.
