LANSING, Mich.-In 1976, Michigan became the first state in the nation to establish a land trust fund specifically subsidized by revenues generated primarily from the oil and gas industry.The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) allows all Michigan residents and visitors to benefit from an active oil and gas industry in the state. The MNRTF began as the Kammer Recreational Land Trust Fund Act of 1976 via Public Act 204 of 1976. Act 204 created the Michigan Land Trust Fund (MLTF) program to provide a source of funding for the public acquisition of lands for resource protection and public outdoor recreation. Funding was derived from royalties on the sale of state-owned mineral resources (primarily oil and gas) and the leasing of state-owned mineral rights.
