FOR the first time since the overhaul of the immigration system in 2008, key changes have heen implemented which now affect whether overseas metal workers and operatives are now entitled to work and live in the UK. Amongst the changes, employers now have to pay any new overseas workers a higher minimum salary. Fortunately, because of the shortage of skilled welders in the UK, businesses wishing to recruit overseas workers for these roles are generally exempt from some of the new tougher and more costly requirements. Pending a full consultation, the Government has instituted a temporary limit of 24,100 workers until April 2011. Until then there is no detail as to which sectors they will cover or even the final level of immigration cap.
