Cautious optimism despite economic turbulence at the 32nd IISI conference

The 32nd Annual Conference of the International Iron and Steel Institute in October 1998 was overshadowed by the Asian economic crisis. L. J. Holschuh, General Secretary of the 1151, delivered the economic outlook for the steel industry for thelast time; as his successor Ian Christmas is now continuing the 1151's work. The economic slump in Asia, Russia and Brazil in 1998 also affected the steel market, resulting in a slight decline of steel consumption. But there is hope for a stabilisingeffect in the year 1999 and a recovery in the medium term.
