Optimism at the 33rd IISI conference about growing steel consumption

The 33rd IISI Annual Conference which took place in Mexico City at the beginning of October was characterised by optimism. For the first time Ian Christmas, since 1998 Secretary General of the IISI, presented the traditional short and medium term IISI outlook. According to this report, the year 2000 will see a 3 % growth in apparent world steel consumption. A 1.6 %/year growth rate is forecast for the decade from 1995 - 2005. However, the steel industry will have to mobilise all forces to maintain its leading position in the dynamic and highly competitive materials market through low production costs, effective image improvement, new products and complete system solutions for its customers.
