In August, Baosteel Group International Trade Corporation, a subsidiary of Shanghai Baosteel Group Corp. (SBGC) awarded to SMS Demag AG, Germany~(1)), as the leader of a consortium, an order to construct a steelworks for specialty steels and three continuous casters, representing a total volume of around 140 million euros. The supply scope comprise essential components of new production facilities at the works of SBGC Shanghai No. 1 Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. in the Baoshan District, Shanghai. The consortium includes Siemens AG~(2)) and Thyssen Krupp Steel Ag~(3)). The commissioning of all the facilities is to be completed in summer 2004.SMS Demag is supplying a hot metal treatment plant (DDD), an electric are furnace (EAF), a converter (AOD-L) for steel treatment and a vacuum degassing facility (VOD). All of the equipment is to be used for the production of specialty steel grades with an annual capacity of approx. 750000 t. The steel types to be produced are austenitic grades such as AISI 304, AISI 304L AND AISI 316 as well as ferritic grades such as AISI 409 and AISI 430. Depending on the grade, specialty steel will be manufactured by using the duplex or triplex processes (with VOD facility) under low production costs. In addition to scrap, the starting materials will be liquid hot metal and liquid ferro-chrome alloys.
