US metal powders market expects shake-up

More restructuring is expected in the US metal powders market following the announcement last week that Hoganas of Sweden had reached agreement to buy FirstMiss Steel of Hollsopple, Pennsylvania. Hoganas intends to convert the works to the production of 100,000 tpy of iron powders (MB Han 24).Claes Lindqvist, managing director of the Swedish company, said it will use only the electric arc furnace at Hollsopple and will sell the rest of the equipment. Hoganas will install an atomization plant and annealing furnaces. The new installations should be complete by the third quarter of 2001.
