Samancor Chrome closes two furnaces

South African ferro-alloys producer Samancor Chrome has decided to close two of its 20 MW furnaces, which have an installed capacity of 80,000 tpy of ferro-chrome.The decision was taken as a result of current market conditions and because the furnaces had developed signs of furnace lining failure, the company said. Delivery of new linings will take six to eight months during which time the furnaces will be examined and a decision taken as to whether they will be repaired or not. The company said there will be some restructuring in the operational framework relating to the furnaces.
