Another man's castle--A dream-and a lot of copper-bring a fairytale to life

That dream slowly started to become reality when Dixie Hall, wife of country singer Tom T. Hall, bought a 14th century linen chest from Freeman, allowing him to make the initial land purchase about 25 miles (40 km) south of Nashville to build his castle in 1980. Freeman built one tower and then added a central hall with the hope he could build another tower to flank it when he had the money Freeman used the tower for his living area, installing a kitchen, bath, bedroom and workout room. He named it Castle Gwynn and, on the back end of his land, he began staging a renaissance fair every year. Thousands of people come from miles around to travel back to 16th century England, where Freeman's castle is the focal point of a renaissance marketplace. More than 60 skilled artisans from all over the country display their wares, from silks and swords, to gems and jewels. Visitors hear the authentic sounds of renaissance musicians and merrymakers as they echo through the trees.
