While zinc is the featured material, aluminum composite walls panels were also important to the visual success of the University of Cincinnati's 50.8 million dollars Tangeman University Center. Completed in 2003, the Tangeman University Center combines extensive new construction with the comprehensive renovation of the university's original student union building. The project team-consisting of GBBN Architects of Cincinnati, OH, and New York City's Gwathmey Siegel & Associates-brought the two elements together by wrapping the old building on three sides with a zinc-clad semicircular addition that terminates at the opposing corners of the original brick-faced Greek Revival facade. To get the remainder of the 180,000 sq. ft. of new construction necessary to achieve the designated goals, the project team razed the original south wing and replaced it with a large-volume, zinc-clad box.
