FREEPORT, MN-Whirlwind Steel Buildings Inc. has broken ground on its fifth manufacturing facility. A ceremony to mark the beginning of its construction took place in early June in Freeport and was attended by state and local dignitaries, media personnel and Whirlwind officials, including Jack Sturdivant, president and CEO. When fully operational, the new plant will have more than 50 employees, which will make it Freeport's largest employer. Sitting on 19 acres of land near the Freeport exit of Interstate 94, the 47,500 sq. ft. facility should be completed in the fourth quarter of 2006. At that location, Whirlwind will manufacture agricultural and residential metal building components, including its Sturdi-Rib, Sturdi-Span, Sturdi-Drain, Sturdi-Panel, Weather Guard and Weather Snap products, plus trim.
