When plans for the Portico condominiums project in Denver, CO, were being developed, it was thought the new mid-rise building would be five stories tall. By substituting an innovative new light-gauge steel floor system for the originally proposed assembly, the design team was able to add an extra story.The initial design called for a five-story cast-in-place shell with stick framing infill. The design team-which included Raymond Williams Construction and architect Ohlson Lavoie-opted on a different approach upon learning about the TradeReady Floor System from Dietrich Metal Framing, Pittsburgh, PA. Using it in combination with light-gauge metal framing reduced the floor assemblies by as much as 12 in per floor, and allowed an extra floor to be added without violating the building's build plane requirements.
