摘要

After the invention of the microscope by Antoni van Leeuwen-hoek in the 1670's, having observed and described protozoa, bacteria, spermatozoa, and red blood cells, it has since then become a useful tool found in virtually every biological laboratory. The ability to study the development, organization, and function of unicellular and higher organisms and to investigate structures and mechanisms at the microscopic level has allowed scientists to better grasp the often misunderstood relationship between microscopic and macroscopic behavior. Further, imaging specimens through a microscope preserves the temporal and spatial relationships between cellular components that are frequently lost in traditional biochemical techniques and produces a two- or three-dimensional resolution that other laboratory methods cannot.
