摘要

We stopped at Nieuwfontein to inquire the way into Bushmanland. We were informed it was difficult. The roads were bad, without any sign posts and no one who could direct us further. Nevertheless we left all our cases and tins with previously collectedplants as we had to return to Nieuwefontein in any event. We drove on in an easternly direction into the Bushmanland. Over hills and through valleys we at last reached Kana with its big water reservoir. From here it became lonely and we met no one again. We had to watch our way very carefully, this being no easy task as there were so many roads running in all directions. We had to take a wide sandy plain and afterwards again reached a high plateau descending gradually in an eastern direction, where wewere supposed to find a river. It was traversed by many deep erosions which crossed our track-road more or less unexpectedly as it was constantly down grade. Soon one of the spring-blades of the front axle broke and we had to drive most cautiously. We had no other difficulties. The plateau ended in a river-bed so we drove along its bank. We reached a tent-settlement of some farmers who kindly showed us the ford across the river.
