The mountains were full of the peculiar plant which has been called "Elephant trunk" by the English people: Pachypodium namquanum Welw. As the plants are very spiny and as the ones from near Steinkopf were far better developed, we did not take any with us. After lunch we packed and drove on again. On the main road we turned and drove on again toward Sendlingsdrift and the Orange River. As we approached the river, the landscape became more and more barren. Hills and dales were full of white quartz pebbles. The shrub Brownanthus pubescens Bullock with its twisted twigs grew here in abundance.
