A method is described for processing iron-and-zinc-bearing sludge and dust. The method uses the Waelz process to solve the problem of utilizing zinc-bearing wastes and increase the amount of finely dispersed metallurgical wastes that is recycled. The article describes the results of laboratory and factory tests performed at Ural Steel to determine the properties of the sinter and other products obtained by Waelz smelting. Results are also presented from studies of the mechanism of interaction of the components of the charge, which consists of metallurgical wastes that contain iron, zinc, and carbon. The interactions of the components are examined after their pelletizing and during the pellets' reductive smelting. Technical and technological measures for introducing the Waelz process are proposed based on an analysis of the test results.
