High-capacity drum-type flying shears were installed in transverse cutting unit (TCU) No. 3 of the metal-finishing shop at the Severstal' Metallurgical Combine in February 2003 to cut bars to measured lengths in a complex that includes a 17-roller straightening machine. The shears were designed and built by specialists at the Novokramatorsk Machine Plant and have several innovations that distinguish them from the well-known foreign-made shears in use at other metallurgical plants in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The new features incorporated into the shears are directed toward increasing productivity, improving the dimensional accuracy of flat-rolled products, and increasing the degree of automation of the main and auxiliary operations. The designers of the shears considered all of the features that would be required in the rebuilt TCU. Among these requirements is the ability to accomodate a broader range of product widths (from 0.5 to 6 m), maintain high-quality edges and surfaces on the cut product, improve the speed characteristics of the unit, and produce items in small batches.
