Nitric oxide (NO) is a highly reactive free radical that plays an important role in the physiology and pathology of the mammalian organism. The mechanism of NO action as well as its function depends on the type of tissue and where it is locally synthesized. The role of this molecule has been well documented in the cardiovascular system, where NO causes vasodilatation. The vasodilatory activity of NO has also been also documented in the reproductive tract. Blood flow through this region undergoes considerable, phase-dependent fluctuations during the oestrous cycle, which strictly correlate with concentrations of ovarian steroid hormones. It has been suggested that NO participates in the mechanism of the vasodilatory action of estrogens. These hormones may trigger the activity of nitric oxide synthesis, which results in an increase in the blood flow through the reproductive tract. The purpose of the article is to summarize the role of NO an the cardiovascular system, and in particular, the role of this molecule in regulating blood flow through the reproductive tract.
