Samples of feces of 84 dogs: 51 from an urban area, 16 from rural areas and 17 from a shelter, as well as 6 cats from an urban area (Pulawy) were examined by ELISA (Alexon Trend - ProSpecTR), Giardia EZ Microplate Assay TM and ProSpecTR Cryptosporidium Microplate Assay TM. The animals were normal, aged from 4 months to 12 years. Koproantigens of Giardia spp. were found in 26.2% of the dogs. Positive results were noted in animals from the urban area (Lublin) both from a shelter and pets. But in the rural dogs extensiveness of invasion was significantly lower and approaching that found at some urban areas (Gdansk and Pulawy). 27.4% of dogs reacted positively in ELISA for koproantigens Cryptosporidium spp. The positive results were noted most often in dogs both from rural and urban areas. The lowest extensiveness of invasion was found in dogs from Lublin, irrespective of their origin. Cryptosporidium spp. was also found in cats.
