Audience response technology: under-appreciated value of post hoc analysis.

Context and setting Using audience response technology, questions are displayed in PowerPoint slides and participants choose answers using clickers. Responses are instantly displayed. This engages audiences and promotes interactivity. We pioneered an unappreciated application of this technology; the post hoc analysis of audience responses to monitor knowledge.Why the idea was necessary There is a need to improve the monitoring of the effectiveness of medical education programmes. Post hoc analysis of audience answers can meet this challenge by sensitively monitoring group (aggregate) and individual knowledge and progress. It offers options for innovative analysis that can be tailored to the needs of an education programme. Other merits include: (i) objectivity; (ii) ease of implementation and grading; (iii) immediate analysis of responses, and (iv) positive acceptance by trainees.
