Lessons learned from a course in emergency medicine.

Context and setting A new course designed to provide all Year 5 students with consistent and integrated exposure to common problems in the emergency ward was developed as a critical pilot course as part of a comprehensive curricular reform programme at Javeriana University School of Medicine, in Bogota, Colombia.Why the idea was necessary Prior to the introduction of this pilot course, students participated in six distinct, required activities in surgical subspecialties (e.g. urology; ear, nose and throat [ENT]; ophthalmology) that covered more than 40 different topics. These separate courses were lecture-based and included clinical experiences, but there was no consistency across the courses and the approach inhibited the integration of information and was too specialised for the education of the general doctor.
