Context and setting UK Northumbria Healthcare is a university-associated NHS Trust with 2 major emergency care centres. There are 140 junior nursing staff working within these, but there is a shortage of formal post-registration opportunities for them to learn about the medical management of critically ill adults. After consultation, a short course was developed using a Laerdal SimMan medium-fidelity simulator to provide realistic clinical scenarios and so improve initial assessment of acute adult admissions.
