Waste minimisation is the weakest part of the Government's waste strategy, according to environment minister, Michael Meacher. Speaking at Waste Watch's annual seminar on waste minimisation, he said: "As economic growth proceeds, waste arisings will increase. But how do we incentivise, cajole pressurize the industry and house-holders to create less waste?" Meacher would also like to see variable charging for waste introduced for householders because charging people for the amount of waste generated, "was a good way of confronting people directly".
