Whatever your opinion about mechanical biological treatment (MBT), be it a great way to process waste or an unnecessary additional stage, it is still a relatively new concept in the UK. With an increasing number of large authorities considering MBT schemes, including Greater Manchester and East London, it appears that the commercial market for MBT technology is growing. This has not gone unnoticed by companies that already run successful MBT plants on the Continent. But not all MBT plants are the same. Rather than referring to one specific system, the term MBT covers a family of technologies. In general it refers to plants that combine processes to separate dry recyclables with biological processes that drive out moisture, stabilise and degrade organic waste. In addition to producing sorted recyclables and compost, plants can also be designed to produce refuse-derived fuel.
