Butchery is an ancient art. Rough knives and bones found in the Neolithic town of Beidha, Jordan, suggest that people were expertly carving up meat for sale as far back as 7000BC. Fast-forward 9,000 years and butchery remains rooted firmly in tradition. Businesses and expertise are still passed down through families, and knife skills are valued above machinery. No surprise, then, that many butchers are behind the times when it comes to modern phenomena such as the internet. Why would a business basedon traditional skills need the trappings of the worldwide web? The answer is simple. While butchery remains rooted in the past, more and more, people are turning to the web to source and purchase food. Home shopping is one of the fastest-growing areas for UK supermarkets, with Asda recording an 82% growth in internet sales this year. Websites can be used as a brochure to promote a business, explaining what sets it apart from the competition and providing contact details, or as a 24-hour shop, reachinga customer base far beyond the confines of the high street.
