When at university many, many years ago, your Doctor knew some fellow students from Middle Eastern countries. They were a mix, really. Some were from Iran and, with the increasing tension and subsequent fall of the Shah, found themselves unable to return home. A few were from Syria, with exotic tales of life in Damascus, and to a young Doctor at the time, who had never even once flown in an aircraft, the idea that you and your colleagues could be born into different countries and regions of the world, into different cultures, languages and religions, into different educational and political systems, and yet still be sitting and working together on some maths problem seemed both exciting and humbling.
