Reflections on Council

Council in March began an hour earlier than usual, with a brainstorming session on membership. It is clear to me that finding ways to significantly increase the membership of the Institute is the most important challenge that we need to address over the next few years. Currently, membership is declining and more than half of our current membership is over 55 years of age. The discussion at Council was continued at the Strategy Weekend which took place a few days later and the ideas that were generated will no doubt feature heavily as the new strategy is developed. One thing that is readily apparent is that we do not attract a significant number of each year's mathematics graduates and if we are going to be successful as a force for good within the whole mathematics community, this needs to change.
