Your Doctor has been thinking about lost books, and, by extension, lost or hidden knowledge. In times of extremis in the past it was often the case that communities in possession of precious or religious manuscripts might come under threat or siege. With the possibility of military defeat and death they faced a terrible dilemma: they did not want their precious knowledge to fall into the wrong hands, but those written forms were too unique or even too sacred to be destroyed. So they secreted them away, in the hope that they might be rediscovered by kinder recipients in the future, who would recognise and revere their value. Of course this type of thing gives rise to all sorts of theories, conspiracies, and even best selling books and movies.
