UKC ends 2008 well

UK Coal's final quarter was the best of 2008, it says, with combined output from its deep and surface mines hitting 2.4mt, close to an annualised l0mt. This fine effort in Q4 was achieved in spite of continued difficult geological conditions at Kellingley and Thoresby collieries and reflects a strong recovery by the latter in November and December plus a very good performance by Daw Mill. Surface mining also climbed, thanks to successes with planning earlier in the year.
